Hualalai at Historic Ka’Upulehu, Hawaii
If year-round balmy weather and
five-star service top your list, there is always Hualalai at Historic
Ka’upulehu, a resort and residential community on Hawaii’s Big Island. Set in
the midst of dramatic black lava flows on the Kona-Kohala coast, the multifamily
dwellings start at $2 million. The newest subdivision is Estate Villas at
Hainoa, currently under construction. Single-family dwellings and custom
homesites are priced up to $14.5 million.
Four Seasons runs the resort and
the lavish 18,000-square-foot spa. The tropical climate allows for massages in
eight outdoor hales, which are thatched huts with bamboo curtains for privacy.
Alternative therapies include acupuncture, chiropractic adjustments to the spine
and biofeedback, a computerized system that monitors changes in physiology to
help manage stress. An extensive fitness program offers everything from personal
training to surfing lessons.
Like resort guests, homeowners who join the
Hualalai Club have access to the spa and the Jack Nicklaus signature Hualalai
Golf Course. Carved out of the black lava fields, the Nicklaus course has
generous landings to keep you out of harm’s way. It runs 7,100 yards from the
back tees, with a rating of 73.7 and a slope of 139. Last summer the club
unveiled the exclusive Weiskopf Golf Course, which runs 7,190 yards from the
back tees, with a rating of 74.2 and a slope of 136. The links-style layout has
fewer trees, steeper bunkers, sharply contoured greens and more forced carries
over lava, providing challenging play for the most intense of golfers. If your
game is good, it is about to get better. And your nongolfing spouse, who has
been reveling in the supreme pampering of the neighboring spa, might even thank
you for it.
