J. R. Storment
On the Market: Mauna Kea, Hawaii
July 1, 2007
Location: Within the Mauna Kea
Resort on a beachfront peninsula on the Big Island of Hawaii.
History: The current owner
purchased two lots in the late 1990s and spent several years creating his dream
home, which was finished in 2002. With 455 feet of frontage on the ocean side,
it is the second-largest property with this type of configuration on the island.
"The only person with more land is Michael Dell, who has 465 feet," says real
estate agent Richard Rocker. (Click image to enlarge)
Stats: The two-acre-plus
property consists of six pavilions separated by a meandering 80,000-gallon
salt-water river, filled with exotic fish. The main living pavilion
opens onto the swimming pool and features a living room, dining room, kitchen
with a vaulted ceiling and skylight, home theater, 2,000-bottle wine room, an
office that opens onto a private putting green and a game room with a custom koa
wood pool table. The exercise pavilion includes equipment, a massage salon
and a steam room. The private master suite pavilion occupies the center of the
property and has expansive views of the Pacific. Additionally, three more
pavilions, identical in layout, each has three bedrooms, a living room and a
small kitchen. In total, there is 17,300 square feet of indoor living space
and 3,600 square feet of lanais.
What Sets It Apart: "There is a
public coastal trail that extends around the island to ensure that the beaches
remain accessible to locals. Normally, this also means that the public has a
full view of any beachfront home," says Rocker. "However, the path is 10 feet
above sea level, and this home is 55 feet above sea level, which means that you
can see the water, but no one at the water can look up and see you." (Click image to enlarge)
