On the Market: Aspen
January 1, 2008
LOCATION: At the base of Aspen’s Red Mountain on Willoughby Way, one of the area’s most prestigious addresses with views to Ajax Mountain and the Roaring Fork Valley.
BACKGROUND: Built in the early
1990s, the tri-level home was among the first to feature Aspen’s now-popular
contemporary mountain style, consisting of log columns, heavy stone work and
large plate-glass windows. The owners bought the home to be a vacation hub for
their large family, which the grandchildren referred to as "The Camp." Architect
Bill Poss, however, christened the property "The Ponds," after the stocked
fishpond situated in front of the home and the property’s other "ponds," the hot
tub and swimming pool, both of which are situated beneath a cascading waterfall.
The home contains a total of 10 bathrooms, consisting of his-and-her bathroom
suites attached to the master bedroom, a full bathroom for each bedroom and four
half baths.
STATS: The 11,400-square-foot home sits on a two-acre forested lot and has five bedrooms, six fireplaces, two elevators (one paneled in ostrich leather), a combination gym and media room and radiant-heat flooring—which extends to the stone patio outside. Other architectural highlights include a curved staircase with woven-leather handrails, a Japanese-style stone fountain in the foyer and a gourmet kitchen with copper accents.
WHAT SETS IT APART: "The location is one of the best in Aspen," says agent Newton Bartley. "It’s set at the base of Red Mountain, so during snow season, you don’t have to worry about driving up snow-packed roads to get to your home. In the summer, you’re only a 15-minute walk from town and all the local festivities."
MARKET INQUIRIES: $27.5 million. Newton Bartley, Joshua & Co., 970.925.8810, www.joshuaco.com
