Elena Colombo: Don’t expect a cherub spouting into a pool. Elena Colombo’s custom water features for indoors and out stem from her training as a classical sculptor. Like her work with water, her fire features are about geometry, and how her shapes interact with their surroundings. She calls her designs "jewelry for the environment"—a necklace of mirrors suspended above water, a bowl enlivened with flames. $10,000 to $250,000. 718.399.2233, www.firefeatures.com
Water Studio: Started by artist Eric Orr (and formerly known as Orr Studio) and continued by his protégé Sean So, Water Studio maintains a staff of architects and engineers to design water walls, fountains and pools. Standouts include their black granite waterwall and their Archimedes Gate water sculpture at a museum in Japan, a granite and copper ring that appears to float above the surface. Starting at $18,000. 310.581.2221, www.wstudio.com
EcoSmart Fire: Austrialian company EcoSmart Fire makes environmentally friendly open fireplaces. There is no flue—you don’t need a chimney and no installation is required—and they are fully energy efficient. Heat from the flame stays in the room, and biodegradable denatured ethanol powers the blaze. They are sleekly designed in stainless steel, and come in freestanding designer ranges, as well as renovator and grate models. $2,300 to $8,800. +61.2.9997.3050, www.ecosmartfire.com
