Bump Up the Lights

Theo Kalomirakis Theaters: If you want a home theater that is as much a work of art as the images to be screened in it, Theo Kalomirakis is your man. The one-time film student has been creating extravagant full-scale theaters since 1989. Dean Koontz, Eddie Murphy and Dwayne "the Rock" Johnson have all partaken of his services. He makes the theaters as glamorous as his clients, using materials such as limestone, Sapele wood, quilted maple and gold leaf, though he can create a theater as large or small, complex or simple as his clients require. Of course, it’s not just about aesthetics, it’s about the acoustics, and he uses only topnotch audio equipment. Starting at $125 per square foot. 212.244.2404, www.tktheaters.com

Lighting Design International: The London company, begun in 1981, creates lighting for everyone from private clients to multinational corporations (they lit British Petroleum’s headquarters), as well as museums and hotels around the globe. They specialize in layering light and highlighting architectural elements—they can make dramatic or subtle effects—and use theatrical, architectural and environmental lighting designers as part of their teams. +44.208.600.5777, www.lightingdesigninternational.com

Bruce Munro: There is no project too small or large for Bruce Munro. His company, located in the small English town of Warminster, creates everything from modest residential projects to massive corporate ones—a planned project includes Circle of Light, 30 light columns that respond to music composed by Orlando Gough. The firm’s approach balances climate, architecture, natural light, function, furniture and fabric. +44.1985.845.228, www.brucemunro.co.uk

Cline Bettridge Bernstein Lighting Design: Working for architects from Robert A.M. Stern to Cesar Pelli, CBB uses a war chest full of luminary weapons to help clients create graceful and comfortable environments. They have illuminated everything from homes to sculpture gardens, and corporate headquarters to shopping malls. 212.741.3280, www.cbbld.com
